History of the Anne Arundel County Sports Hall of Fame

The idea to form a "Hall of Fame" was developed after several years of reviewing the accomplishments of numerous Anne Arundel County residents, both past and present.  The contribution made to athletics by our residents is remarkable.  Therefore, a group was formed to develop a chronology of events and accomplishments to establish our county sportsmen as elite performers in every major athletic activity.

Our county can boast of state, national, international, world and Olympic champions.  We found major league ball players with all-star credentials.  We also found bowlers, coaches, media personalities, wrestlers, swimmers, horse racing legends, and many more who had established bench marks of excellence in sport that demanded local recognition.  The decision to form a "Hall of Fame" to honor the many superb athletes, coaches, and sport figures that were or are Anne Arundel County residents while achieving their success was in order.

In 1991, the Anne Arundel County Sports Hall of Fame, Inc. was established for a twofold purpose.

The primary function of the organization is to recognize county residents who have excelled athletically or who have contributed greatly to the advancement of county athletics in some manner.

Each year, two to five individuals will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.  The honorees will be feted and officially enshrined at an annual banquet.

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must have resided in Anne Arundel County for a period of ten years and have maintained a close affiliation with the county while away achieving excellence in their field.

The second purpose of the organization is to raise money to support and promote athletics here in Anne Arundel County.  The Hall has contributed thousands of dollars to numerous amateur groups, schools and other organized programs in the county to assist "Future Hall of Famers" to develop their skills.

Monies raised during the annual banquet and through other events held by the organization go into a standing fund which will be distributed to worthy athletic causes.

We look to the future with great expectations for the continued success of our your athletes and coaches who will establish new levels of excellence and meet the athletic challenges of the world.
